used in cosmetics, skincare products, food, and medicine.
There are seven common types of parabens:
- Methyl paraben
- Ethyl paraben
- Propyl paraben
- Butyl paraben
- Isopropyl paraben
- Isobutyl paraben and benzyl paraben
In 2014, the European Union banned the use of five types of parabens in cosmetics, including isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, phenylparaben, benzylparaben, and pentylparaben.
In 2004, a cell molecular biologist from the UK named Dr. Philippa Darbre published a paper in a toxicology journal (Journal of Applied Toxicology) reporting that the average concentration of paraben in 20 human breast tumor samples was 20.6 ng/g. In 2012, Dr. Philippa Darbre extracted 160 samples from 40 patients who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and needed a mastectomy between 2005 and 2008. She found that 99% of the samples contained at least one type of paraben, and 60% contained five types of paraben.
In 2022, a new study was presented at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society in the United States. The study found three things:
Parabens accelerated the growth of black breast cancer cells, but not white breast cancer cells, at the same concentration.
Parabens were also found to increase hormone action gene expression in both black and white breast cancer cells.
Parabens accelerated the spread of breast cancer cells, with a greater impact on black breast cancer cells.
To date, the medical community has not confirmed that the total concentration of parabens ingested in daily life can lead to breast cancer.
